Dr. T Karthikeyan

A seasoned Diabetologist with over two decades of professional experience, Dr. T Karthikeyan hails from Vellore city in Tamil Nadu. Founder of Sterling Diabetes Hospital at Katpadi (Vellore), Dr. Karthikeyan uses modern and innovative methods as solutions to alleviate the problems of patients suffering from diabetes.

Dr. Karthikeyan is a MBBS graduate with the coveted MRCP (UK) qualification, a postgraduate medical diploma and an internationally recognised benchmark of clinical excellence. His work experience in UK has been an astounding one. This includes serving at many known institutions such as Basildon General Hospital (Basildon), Colchester General Hospital (Colchester), Broomfield Hospital (Chelmsford), Royal Free Hospital (London), Southend Hospital (Southend), South Tyneside District Hospital (South Shields), Harrogate District Hospital (Harrogate), West Wales General Hospital (Carmarthen) and Prince Charles Hospital (Merthyr Tydfil). In these professional associations, he executed miscellaneous duties such as SHO in Medicine and allied specialities, Specialist Registrar in General medicine, Specialist Registrar in Elderly Medicine and teaching activities, with efficiency and ease. He actively contributed towards the success of Computer Aided Learning (CAL) project at Colchester General Hospital through teaching sessions including Medical Master class (published by RCP, London), development of software library and advisor for medicine section. Dr. Karthikeyan constantly strives for quality improvement in services and succeeds in achieving the same through participation in Clinical Audit, an important means of evaluating service standards in healthcare.

On his return from UK, Dr. Karthikeyan laid the foundation of Sterling Diabetes Hospital, a fully equipped centre that provides comprehensive diabetes care to areas in and around Vellore. The centre with a registration of 3000 patients maintains computerized records and offers telephonic consultation to disabled and frail diabetic patients who are unable to visit the clinic personally. His principal aim is to create a strong awareness among the masses and to achieve this he has made use of local language based consultation printouts, power point slides in local Tamil language and DVDs in Tamil and English that focus on Diabetes. He has published books that contain simple and lucid content on Diabetes and highlight ways to maintain appropriate care.

Dr. Karthikeyan regularly conducts live interactive television shows and health camps to instill high diabetes awareness among the general public. He also is at the forefront of health camps that offer services at a subsidized price, to the poor and needy.

Currently, Dr. Karthikeyan is directing his efforts towards establishing a satellite clinic in Sathuvachary for diabetic patients. The centre plans to use new age technology such as Skype and Web Cam to provide telemedicine service to patients thus reducing the need to visit the clinic personally. Moreover, with the development of an Android application tool, Dr. Karthikeyan aims to improve the diabetic patient’s compliance with tests and medications. His constant endeavour is to bring down the number of new diabetic cases in the community and increase the life span of diabetic patients by preventing the complications arising through high blood sugar.
